Book Review// Practical Magic + Tarot Reading

When I got to page 16 of Alice Hoffman's book I knew I was hooked. I couldn't stop reading about the Owens sisters. I was looking for books with witches in them and when i saw Alice had two books with witches in them - sold. Like the women in the beginning of the book, I had come to this book seeking an answer to my hearts desires. I had scars to prove I knew about love and how dangerous it was. Alice Hoffman defines magical realism. Love potions, auroras, spirits, sacrifices, she writes about the lives  of two sisters who grew up in near Salem, Massachusetts with her spellbinding words.

one of my favorite qualities of this story is the development of the characters Gillian, Sally, and it takes a step further into the next generation, Sally's daughter's Kylie and Antonia. this is a story about desire and all the characters are running away, or trying to avoid love. The book was written in 1995 and i'm glad to see this book is so popular (she came out with the prequel Rules of Magic  2017) I'm also glad i did not read it until now - this is a mature book not just because it has the word "fuck" a lot. Sometimes i think i'm the people in the book - I felt very much like Gillian, swearing to never return to her past or to ever fall hopelessly in love. When I learned more about Gillian's past relationship I couldn't help but hope magic will work itself in my life too. this book gives you a feeling that horoscopes and premonitions not just self fulfilling prophecies. itd important to cut bad ties and burn sage and work with aromatic herbs.

"Everyone agreed that Sally's sister was confusing. There were times when you'd meet her at the grocery and shed insist you come on over and let her play around with her tarot cards for you, and other times when you'd say hello to her on the street only to have her look right through you, as if she were a million miles away, say in a place like Tucson, where life was a lot more interesting."

My goal is a spoiler free review and from Kylie's 13th birthday things like the past are unburied. the gorgeous prose, the reason why i pick up Alice Hoffman books without question, begin to haunt me.  i got goosebumps like i too had seen his ghost, was it someone haunting me from my own past? Gillian and I both have red hair but another message I got from this book was owning your magic.i like how this book teaches you the value of knowing your ancestors.

You guys know My book reviews always have a twist to them. Instead of choosing witchy fashion accessories I asked my friend Co op of Creation, an artisan candle maker and psychic, for a tarot reading. She surprised me with a gracious reading Celtic Cross Spread. I thought this would be a great idea for my book blog, and to share some practical magic with you guys.

Another thing I love about this book and just like the other Alice Hoffman book I reviewed, was her research. Witchy rituals, men put under spells, burning the name of your lover every friday night so you could rid your desire of him - i wonder did Alice Hoffman try any of these or if she recommends any spells! Let me know in the comments if you've read the book or seen the movie? have you tired some of these rituals or do you have a spell to use to let go or even a money spell? Have you ever felt like you were cursed? if you guys want to read my in depth reading with Co - Op, keep reading!

My Reading

Her name is Desiree, a name that means desire. She poured candles with crushed black tourmaline, dried lilies and spiritual intentions. Her heart is put into each one. Burn to have lavender dreams, or for cutting ties with the man you love. She set out a 10- card spread, an in-depth tarot reading called a Celtic Cross spread. The cards are meant as a guide. I stared at the card Death and the reversed Devil, feeling calm because my soul knew that some things have to die in order to grow. Her reading was accurate. Seeing the cards displayed made me more certain what i had to do. I did see my demons now like ghosts who didn't stop watching me. It was time to send those demons back to their world so i could live my life again.

If any one else seeks a tarot reading i couldn't recommend Desiree enough. Her Instagram is @co_opofcreation and her shop is on etsy

Card 1- The Heart of the Matter-
This card is centered around your job and financial situation, and your fear of making changes in regards to this. There is an imbalance in your current job, whether the balance of of work and play, or whether its referring to your income to goal ratio; whatever you are doing right now is not working. Its not fulfilling you. You have blockages around change, and accepting that things will change whether you are ready or not. You need to change your thinking regarding making a change in your job. It doesn't have to be big, scary monster of a thing. It can be fun! You are a butterfly, and you need to approach change with grace. There are so many possibilities out there for you!

Card 2- Opposing Factor- Reversed Devil-
You've got some demons, but the good news is you are on the cusp of ridding yourself of them. Sometimes the reversed devil can refer to divorce, seeking mental help, or of your sudden realization that you can change all of these things yourself, if you so choose. Its all within your power. In order to step into this new version of yourself, you need to let go of the fear and limiting beliefs that stand in the way of your growth. Once you starting bringing about these positive changes in your life, you're going to see a whole new you; you will be transformed!

Card 3- Root Cause- Reversed 9 of Cups-
This card is telling you to reconsider what you thought you were wishing for. You may be feeling disappointed and frustrated  that your dreams haven't come true yet, or you may not even be able to actively pursue them at the moment. Your expectations may even be unrealistic, and therefore unfulfilling. Now is the time to reconnect with your goals and what success means to you. Make sure your goals and dreams are in alignment with your personal values, and then BE PROACTIVE in creating an action plant to make them happen.

Card 4- Past- Reversed 2 of Swords-
In the recent past, you found yourself caught between a rock and a hard place. Neither option seemed to offer a positive outcome, but a choice had to be made. Mental confusion, a stale mate of sorts; a situation where you were stuck in the middle. You may still be feeling the ripples from this situation which can feel a little disheartening. This may be contributing to your feelings of your visions being blocked. You can let go of that situation, and realign yourself. Eventually these lingering feelings regarding this situation will fade, and you will feel more yourself.

Card 5- Goal- Father of Pentacles-
You have an entrepreneurial spirit. It looks like your goals may be for a steady income in this fashion, something that aligns with your creative spirit. You may also be yearning for a person in your life who emits these same qualities- passionate yet calm, presents stability in their job and family life, and prioritizes both of those things. When you get yourself on a path that aligns with your desire to make an income from your creative ideas, you will meet people who align with this as well. Where thoughts and focus go, energy flows!

Card 6- Future- Reversed Mother of Wands-
This card implies that you may be in process of becoming a sort of a shrinking daisy. You may be concerned about your reputation, and how others may no be viewing you as the real deal anymore. You need to restore your face in yourself. You need to believe in yourself! What you need to know is that YOU can combat anything once you set your mind to it. You need to free yourself from those around you who are behaving in a pushy or manipulative fashion. Free yourself from those harmful people, and free yourself from our own negative thoughts. You can take control of your life and become the vibrant, attractive, graceful, and determined person that you really are inside.
Card 7- You- Death-
This card represents you, and a huge, life altering change. It represents closure, and transformation. Something in your life needs closure. Something in your life needs to end. This thing will happen whether you choose it to or not. Either way, you will begin to see a positive transformation after you have finished the grieving process. With death comes life, and the cycle continues. You can be remade into anything you want from this.

Card 8- External Influences- Reversed Father of Cups-
You are embracing the outside guidance of focusing attention on your innermost feelings and emotions, and increasing your self awareness and self compassion. You may be journaling more, or reading self help books, or even seeing a counselor or looking into hypnosis. Its an emotional time for you. You need to deal with these emotions head on instead of bottling them up or having an emotional outburst. You have deep seeded insecurities that need to be dealt with, with that same compassion you have been showing to others.Try to dive deep into the root of these emotional responses so you can work on gaining control of them.

Card 9- Hopes and Fears- Reversed 6 of Swords-
You have alot of baggage and you are afraid of carrying it with you forever. You can see the hope on the horizon but some times feel like you aren't moving toward it because of these things pulling you back and weighing you down. Once you shed the idea that these things will be with you forever, you can move toward that recovery and relief that seems to hover just out of reach. Taking short trip may help, if you are able. Actual motion may help with emotional motion.
Card 10- Final Outcome- Reversed Wheel of Fortune-
This card is a call to action. Things are in motion, whether you want it or not, and you can either do nothing and hope for the best, or you can act to improve your situation. This is your opportunity to get your life back on track, and to take control of your destiny. Accept responsibility for where you are now, consider how you got there, and use it to learn. You don't have to make the same mistakes again. You can change everything. Even if you feel that change is being forced on you, you just have to accept that change is inevitable. Once you start going with the flow, you will have a much improved experience. This card represents a breaking of the negative cycle that has been present in your life. Get going
