The Last Unicorn : A Dark Fantasy Musical
I'll admit it: i never sat and watched the Last Unicorn. I would start the movie but somewhere after the harpie escape, I stop paying attention. My attention was seized this time when I overheard that the last unicorn was running from the red bull, and the magician is upset because he doesn't know real magic, he feels like he can't save her. The quote that Molly says grabbed my attention,
"But you do. You have magic. Maybe you can't find it, but it's there...You have all the power you need if you dared to look for it."
she's encouraging him to believe in himself when he feels helpless, and then the real magic happens.
the last unicorn is turned into a human.
- [Schmendrick has turned the Unicorn into a mortal woman]
- Unicorn: What have you done to me?
- Molly Grue: Oh, no... oh, please, no...
- Schmendrick: You see, I... I couldn't think of anything else to do to save you.
- Unicorn: [in utter horror] What have you done to me? I'm a unicorn! I'm a unicorn!
- Molly Grue: Don't! Don't, you'll hurt yourself!
- Schmendrick: Be still! The magic knew what it was doing. In this shape alone, you have some hope of reaching King Haggard and finding out what has become of the other unicorns.
- Unicorn: [crying] I wish you had let the Red Bull take me... I wish you had left me to the harpy! I can feel this body DYING all around me!
- Schmendrick: But it's only for a little while, I promise you. Soon you'll have your true shape again forever.
- Molly Grue: Why not now? Schmendrick, you can't let her stay like this. You can't possibly...
- Schmendrick: Why not? Unless you think you could defeat the bull if you met him again.
- Unicorn: No... but I am afraid of this mortal body... more afraid than I was of the Red Bull. Afraid!
The animation style is really lacking and i think is why i lose focus, because the voice talents stars Christopher Lee.
I felt like this movie for me symbolized love, and beauty. Innocence. I cried at the end, because the prince doesn't get the princess, and they have to live on without each other and it's the regret, and pain that comes from love, that i think i could only have understood as an adult.
This was definitely not a kid's movie. Makes me miss these classic fantasy stories, where the sea traps unicorns, where skeleton's laugh and remember the taste of wine, heroes, magicians, different kinds of magic, a silly butterfly, a pirate cat that speaks in riddles.
the quote Schmedrick "There are no happy endings, because nothing ends." keeps stinging, and when the ending of the movie did came, I was so sad, and happy. the unicorns were free. she remembered her love for the prince, and it's why she knew regret.
beauty ends and becomes something else. beauty has been a lot on my mind since foundation doesn't like my skin, my skin is just starting to sag because of a magical thing called gravity, my teeth are rotting, and her words again came up "i can feel my body dying!"
She almost gave up the quest on finding her unicorn and her identify to become someone else who knew what love was. the scene where they almost turn back from the red bull but the hero, who has her best interests at heart, loves what he loves. i don't see this portrayed in movies anymore. but this kind of fantasy love, where he sacrifices himself for her to make her happy. it's all he wants, and i loved that the knight tried writing poetry, slayed dragons, became a hero for her and just wanted to be what she needed. i just loved the knight falling in love with the princess in this classic story tale.
Hurt when Prince Leer said goodbye to his friends, "I never had any friends" he had truly been alone in the tower and it must've been awful having a father who could never be happy.
King Haggard was another great villain. Unlocked a new favorite bad guy. He could never be satisfied, never be happy, even after adopting a son, even having the best magician, the only thing that gave him any joy was seeing the unicorns trapped in the sea. But even then, he didn't have it all. he wanted more, life is full of that kind of suffering.
one of my favorite songs was when she sang "now that i'm a woman" and it convinced me that this was a movie about losing beauty and innocence.
speaking of the music, so 80's. would classify this animated cult classic as a musical because they sing to move the story forward.
i'm regretting now not picking up the VHS copy of The Dark Crystal when I saw it and selling my special edition holographic DVD copy of The Last Unicorn and need more dark fantasies. At a Hospice yesterday, I found The Lord of the Rings 3-disc set but it only had 1 disc. These will def. be added to my hunt for my movie collection!
