Where Fantasy Meets Fashion: Interview with Shadow of a Dragon

When I spotted Shadow of a Dragon, I was pulled into a fantasy realm. Japanese gardens for headdresses. Cultures around the world throughout history use headdresses in ceremonies and for rank. To stand out in the field of battle, the Roman helmet with the red crest was worn only by officers. A war bonnet of prized eagle feathers trailing behind a Noble Native American symbolized not just the bold, high – flying predator but a respected man. Looking through Shadow of a Dragon’s wares made me curious about the fantasy lore behind her pieces. The costume pieces take you out of your element to a place where magic is more than spells and conjurations, but part of the characters that belong to the land of elves and Forrest fawns. She was so kind to let me ask her questions about her mystical creations.

Where are you from and what inspires you?

First I like to say I am a pagan and my religious beliefs fall on the old ways of gods and goddesses. The magic and mystery of the past always inspired me to express myself. Halloween is my birthday as well. So of course Halloween inspires some of my work. The other side comes from many different places. I am a huge science fiction geek and Star Wars fan. I even collect comic books. The other place I draw on is my yard. It is very zen / Asian inspired. I just love red and of course roses. I am from New Hampshire.

What’s your favorite Star Wars look? And who are your favorite comic book heroes?

I really like the crown pieces the queen has. My favorite is the silver and white one with the dangles. I am also a huge fan of the originals (I am probably older than you!) a lot of my dark side pieces are from the siths. I would love to make a few for the movie…dream. Wonder Woman old and new, hela huge fan of Thor.

What’s one of your favorite pieces you’ve done and are you working on anything right now?

I am working on my ice series right now – one more. Then on to 3 which are fire inspired. I also wanted to add music which is also a huge influence. I honestly love them all. I create them because I love to express myself through my pieces.

Have you always played dress up? Would you say that back then it was harder to dress up as a fairy than it is today? What advice would you give to those who aspire to feel more like their fantasy themed selves?

I have always dressed up. I have been reading to children for years. I visit the burn and cancer and elderly on a volunteer basis. As in advice I say be yourself no matter what. I tell people ‘hey we do live on a ball in space. Our time here is short so be happy.’ Another big ball can take us out!

What 3 words best describe your shop? And what’s one of your favorite books?

Whimsical, magical, and unique. The Art of War.

What is the best place to buy your stuff and contact you about orders?

Best is through my Etsy store or my Facebook page. Both are connected together. I always answer to messages.
